Description:

The quantitative component (Francien Scholten PI, Joseph Mugisha Co-I , Eugene Kinyanda Co-I) does this by comparing the results of interviews, a blood test (using dried blood spots (DBS) to determine the hemoglobin levels but to also look at biological variables related to cardiovascular, metabolic and physiological/stress function), and a physical assessment among 5 groups consisting of: 100 older people who are HIV infected and on ART, 100 older people who are infected and waiting to be on ART, 100 older people who have an adult child that died of HIV/ AIDS, 100 older people who are indirectly affected by HIV because they have an adult child on ART, and 100 older people who are neither directly nor indirectly affected by HIV/AIDS (control group). The total number of participants is 500, and of these 500 there will 250 from an urban, and 250 from a rural population in Uganda.

The qualitative component (Janet Seeley, PI, Flavia Zalwango, Co-I) is being undertaken with 40 participants (half from rural and half from urban sites aged over 60 years), consists of monthly visits for up to 12 months to collect an oral diary on the older person’s life the week prior to the visit as well as document their life story, in order to learn more about their well-being and the impact of HIV and AIDS on their lives.

Coverage: Uganda.
